There is no secret that many top sports stars get paid an extraordinary amount of money, some might say even ludicrous. But for the majority of professional sportsmen and sportswomen who are content to shun the limelight there are others who love to be on a par with the top celebrities in the world.
But there are many athletes that don’t seek high fashion and like to spend their money in more charitable ways. Numerous sports people have founded their own charitable associations or have supported various charities with either cash or patronage. For those athletes who have come to the conclusion that they are earning top wages and living a privileged live, and have made a decision to help others less fortunate that this blog is devoted to. We focus on some lesser known athletes who have shown just how generous athletes can be.
The basketball legend Dikembe Mutombo has to be one of the most active sportsmen when it comes to charitable deeds. The list of charities that Mutombo has supported is quite unbelievable: FACE Africa, Make-A-Wish Foundation, UNICEF, Right to Play and the ONE Campaign. In 1997 he founded the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation which was set up to help the peoples of the Democratic Republic of Congo, his home nation. Mutombo has won countless accolades for his tireless humanitarian work and one of his greatest achievements was the building of Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in the Congolese capital Kinasha.
As well as being a clean cut All American, the American Football player Drew Brees has been highly active in helping charities. He founded Dream Foundation, which was established to work with Operation Kids to help rebuild schools that were damaged during Hurricane Katrina. His other charitable work has been to raise awareness for a variety of children’s issues, including teen problems and family issues. Drew Brees has taken full advantage of his popularity to open doors and get his fans aware of issues that previously they might never of heard of.
David Beckham is known all over the world, married to a pop superstar this former captain of England’s Football team and ex-player of Manchester United and Real Madrid is about as famous as you can get as a sports personality. Beckham is also associated with high fashion and is seldom out of the media. What is probably not known about David Beckham is the amount he does for charity. He actually formed his own charitable organization, the Victoria and David Beckham Charitable Trust.
One of David Beckham’s greatest off the field achievements was to be appointed as a UNICEF ambassador, and he supports many other charities that include, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Sport Relief and Help for Heroes. In many ways David Beckham has shown the way for famous sporting personalities to actively participate in charitable work.
